Ella Kruglyanskaya, The Nap, 2021

Ella Kruglyanskaya (b. 1978, Riga, Latvia; based in New York) paints vignettes with exaggerated depictions of the female body, her subjects confronting their audience with unabashed femininity. Kruglyanskaya’s figures reenact and subvert the womanhood canonized in traditions of western painting and in visual culture, infusing gendered tropes with her brash and comedic approach to representation. Kruglyanskaya works non-hierarchically and seamlessly between painting and drawing mediums; her painting subjects are often trompe l’oeil renderings of her drawings, situated in the light and shadow of her studio or lying underneath paintbrushes and other tools.

Kruglyanskaya attended the Cooper Union, New York and received an MFA at the Yale School of Art. Solo exhibitions of her work have been staged at Studio Voltaire, London, UK; Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn, Germany; Tate Liverpool, UK. Bortolami, New York; Contemporary Fine Arts, Basel, Switzerland; Thomas Dane Gallery, London; Jason Haam, Seoul, among others.

Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at The Metropolitan Opera, New York; The Issac Bell House, Newport, RI; Berkeley Art Museum; International Centre of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana, Slovenia; J.F. Willumsen Museum, Freferikssund, Denmark; The Campus, Hudson, New York; kim? Contemporary Art Centre, Riga, Latvia; The Baltic Triennial, Vilnius, Lithuania; The Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst, Illinois; Marlborough Gallery, London; Jeffrey Deitch, Los Angeles.
